ENG 225 Week 4- Acting and Acting Styles- Bruce Almighty

Bruce Almighty (2003) Poster

The movie I chose for this week’s blog assignment is Bruce Almighty directed by Tom Shadyac.  Bruce Almighty was written by Steve Koren, Mark O’Keefe, and Steve Oedekerk. This movie was released in May of 2003 and stars Jim Carrey as Bruce Nolan, Morgan Freeman as God, Jennifer Aniston as Grace, and Steve Carrell as Evan Baxter.

The three actors that I have chosen from this film to discuss are Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, and Steve Carrell. In this film Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell are both character actors. Morgan Freeman is a personality/ impersonator actor in this film. Character actors are able to fit into a wide variety of different characters and are able to adapt to the need of the script (Goodykoontz & Jacobs. 2014). A personality actor uses their own personality when playing a role, they are the foundation of their role. An impersonator does exactly what the name suggests, they impersonate another real person or being in a film.

Character Actor

Jim Carrey  For this film Carrey took the role of  Bruce Nolan and funnied it up. Although Carrey is known for being over the top, he toned it down just a little in this film,in my opinion.

Personality/ Impersonator Actor

Morgan Freeman Morgan Freeman took on the role of God in this film and I think he was the perfect pick. Freeman is known for his voice and calm demeanor and that is exactly what he brought to this role. Although no one knows exactly how God looks or the way he behaves, I’m sure that Morgan Freeman pulled off the best impersonation that one could imagine.

Character Actor

Steve Carrell  In the role of co-anchor and arch nemesis of Jim Carrey’s character is Steve Carrell. The role of Evan Baxter was perfect for Steve Carrell. He has always been a very sarcastic, dry humor type of actor and the scene above showcases his comedic humor in the film.

When thinking of Morgan Freeman one can only help but hear his voice. Morgan Freeman has such an authoritative voice and he speaks so intelligently that he can be cast into any role of authority or intelligence. Some of his film credits include: Evan Almighty (2007) which is a spin-off from Bruce Almighty, Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). He has also  acted in movies such as Nurse Betty (2000) and The Big Bounce (2004) which were both comedies. Knowing this about Morgan Freeman helps me to place him into the category of a Wild Card actor, which is to say that he can’t be placed under a particular acting style because his acting style isn’t necessarily traditional( Goodykoontz&Jacobs. 2014).
